CFBA Presents SONG OF MY HEART by Kim Vogel Sawyer

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Song of My Heart
(Bethany House - February 1, 2012)
by
Kim Vogel Sawyer

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kim Vogel Sawyer is the author of fifteen novels, including several CBA and ECPA bestsellers. Her books have won the ACFW Book of the Year Award, the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence, and the Inspirational Readers Choice Award. Kim is active in her church, where she leads women's fellowship and participates in both voice and bell choirs. In her spare time, she enjoys drama, quilting, and calligraphy. Kim and her husband, Don, reside in central Kansas, and have three daughters and numerous grandchildren.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sadie Wagner has always been devoted to her family. So when her stepfather is injured and can't work, she decides to leave home and accept a position as a clerk at the mercantile in Goldtree, Kansas. Goldtree also offers the opportunity to use her God-given singing talent--though the promised opera house is far different from what she imagined. With her family needing every cent she can provide, Sadie will do anything to keep her job.

Thad McKane comes to Goldtree at the request of the town council. The town has been plagued by bootlegging operations, and Thad believes he can find the culprit. After he earns enough money doing sheriff work, he wants to use it to pay for his training to become a minister.

Thad is immediately attracted to the beautiful singer who performs in Asa Baxter's unusual opera house, but when he hears her practicing bawdy tunes, he begins to wonder if she's far less innocent than she seems. And when Sadie appears to be part of the very crimes he's come to investigate, is there any hope the love blossoming between them will survive?

JEN'S THOUGHTS

It's no secret that I'm a fan of Kim Vogel Sawyer. I haven't read a book of hers yet that I didn't like. But Song of My Heart may just have become my favorite. Sawyer gives us strong, likable, believable characters in Sadie and Thad. You can't help but be drawn into their story and root for them to get together. But it becomes obvious that more than one obstacle will get in their way. Combine a great love story with a lost of well-drawn secondary characters, and you have a book that is both entertaining and moving. Thumbs up to Sawyer on another great read.

CFBA Presents A WHISPER OF PEACE by Kim Vogel Sawyer

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Whisper of Peace
(Bethany House - September 1, 2011)
by
Kim Vogel Sawyer

Ostracized by her tribe because of her white father, Lizzie Dawson lives alone in the mountains of Alaska, practicing the ways of her people even as she resides in the small cabin her father built for her mother. She dreams of reconciling with her grandparents to fulfill her mother's dying request, but she has not yet found a way to bridge the gap that separate her from her tribe.

Clay Selby has always wanted to be like his father, a missionary who holds a great love for the native people and has brought many to God. Clay and his stepsister, Vivian, arrive in Alaska to set up a church and school among the Athbascan people. Clay is totally focused on this goal...until he meets a young, independent Indian woman with the most striking blue eyes he's ever seen.

But Lizzie is clearly not part of the tribe, and befriending her might have dire consequences for his mission. Will Clay be forced to choose between his desire to minister to the natives and the quiet nudging of his heart?

If you would like to read the first chapter of A Whisper of Peace, go HERE.

THOUGHTS FROM JEN
When it comes to historical fiction, you can't go wrong with a book from Kim Vogel Sawyer. She has a knack for creating characters who come to life on the page.  This book just arrived last week, so I've only now started reading it. But like the best of Sawyer's books, it starts off strong, and I immediately want to know more about Lizzie. It's safe to say this will be another story I'll hate to see come to an end.

CFBA Presents COURTING MISS AMSEL by Kim Vogel Sawyer

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Courting Miss Amsel
(Bethany House - January 1, 2011)
by
Kim Vogel Sawyer

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kim Vogel Sawyer is the author of fifteen novels, including several CBA and ECPA bestsellers. Her books have won the ACFW Book of the Year Award, the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence, and the Inspirational Readers Choice Award. Kim is active in her church, where she leads women's fellowship and participates in both voice and bell choirs. In her spare time, she enjoys drama, quilting, and calligraphy. Kim and her husband, Don, reside in central Kansas, and have three daughters and six grandchildren.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Edythe Amsel is delighted with her first teaching assignment: a one-room schoolhouse in Walnut Hill, Nebraska. Independent, headstrong, and a strong believer in a well-rounded education, Edythe is ready to open the world to the students in this tiny community. But is Walnut Hill ready for her?

Joel Townsend is thrilled to learn the town council hired a female teacher to replace the ruthless man who terrorized his nephews for the past two years. Having raised the boys on his own since their parents' untimely deaths, Joel believes they will benefit from a woman's influence. But he sure didn't bargain on a woman like Miss Amsel.

Within the first week, she has the entire town up in arms over her outlandish teaching methods, which include collecting leaves, catching bugs, making snow angels, and stringing ropes in strange patterns all over the schoolyard. Joel can't help but notice that she's also mighty pretty with her rosy lips, fashionable clothes, and fancy way of speaking.

When Edythe decides to take her pupils to hear Miss Susan Anthony speak on the women's suffrage amendment, the town's outcry reaches new heights. Even Joel isn't sure he can support her newfangled ideas any longer. And if he can't trust her to know how to teach the boys, how can he trust her with his heart?

JEN'S THOUGHTS

Having spent most of last week either preparing for or attending the annual ACFW Conference, I find myself way behind on things. Sadly, I've only just started reading In Every Heartbeat, so I can't share many thoughts about it. I will say that it starts off with the promise of being a great read. Of course, I would expect nothing less from the lovely and talented Kim Vogel Sawyer. If you've read it, why don't you share your thoughts with everybody. We'd love to hear from you!

CFBA Presents A HOPEFUL HEART by Kim Vogel Sawyer

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Hopeful Heart
(Bethany House - June 1, 2010)
by
Kim Vogel Sawyer

Dowryless and desperate, Tressa Neill applies to the inaugural class of Wyatt Herdsman School in Barnett, Kansas, in 1888. The school's one-of-a-kind program teaches young women from the East the skills needed to become a rancher--or the wife of one.

Shy and small for her twenty-two years, Tressa is convinced she'll never have what it takes to survive Hattie Wyatt's hands-on instruction in skills such as milking a cow, branding a calf, riding a horse, and cooking up a mess of grub for hungry ranch hands. But what other options does she have?

Abel Samms wants nothing to do with the group of potential brides his neighbor brought to town. He was smitten with an eastern girl once--and he got his heart broken. But there's something about quiet Tressa and her bumbling ways that makes him take notice.

When Tressa's life is endangered, will Abel risk his own life--and his heart--to help this eastern girl?

JEN'S THOUGHTS

I absolutely loved this book! Kim Vogel Sawyer is a master of making you feel the emotions her characters experience. So I expected to be drawn into the story of Tressa Neil, a city girl who's way out of her element on the Kansas Prairie. What I wasn't expecting was such a completely engrossing, entertaining read. In A Hopeful Heart, Kim takes what could have been your typical historical romance and deftly mixes in elements of comedy , mystery, and a journey of faith. The result is a book that was hard for me to put down, even to the point of missing sleep. Anymore, it takes a lot to keep me reading late into the night, but this book did. Thumbs up to Kim! I can't wait to see what's next.

Kim Vogel Sawyer

Best-selling, award-winning author Kim Vogel Sawyer is a wife, mother, grandmother, author, speaker, singer of songs and lover of chocolate... but most importantly, she's a born-again child of the King!

A former elementary school teacher, Kim closed her classroom door in 2005 to follow God's call on her heart to write and speak. Now blessed with multiple writing contracts with Bethany House, Barbour, and Zondervan Publishing, Kim enjoys sharing her journey to publication as well as the miraculous story of her healing from a life-long burden of pain and shame.

Kim's gentle yet forthright testimony lends credence to the promise of Ps. 117:2--"Great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever."

ABOUT THE BOOK

With their eldest son nearly to the age when he will be drafted into military service, Reinhardt and Lillian Vogt decide to immigrate to America, the land of liberty, with their three sons and Reinhardt's adopted brother, Eli. But when tragedy strikes during the voyage, Lillian and Eli are forced into an agreement neither desires.

Determined to fulfill his obligation to Reinhardt, Eli plans to see Lillian and her sons safely settled on their Kansas homestead--and he's equally determined that the boys will be reared in the Mennonite faith. What he doesn't expect is his growing affection for Lillian--and the deep desire to be part of a family.

A Promise for Spring by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Jen's review
of
A Promise for Spring
by
Kim Vogel Sawyer

When an English rose is transplanted to the Kansas prairie, can anything be easy? Of course not! Even though they were betrothed five long years earlier, Emmaline Bradford no longer knows the man she meets when she steps off the train in Moreland, Kansas. For his part, Geoffrey Garrett has practically been counting the minutes till the arrival of his bride. But the nervous, sullen woman clad in black is a far cry from his dream girl.

Kim Vogel Sawyer has a gift for writing characters who struggle through adversity and come out stronger for it. In Emmaline and Geoffrey, she presents two stubborn people, each working through a pain of their own. It's not until they put their own needs aside and truly see each other that reconciliation comes.

A Promise for Spring is a lovely tale of the men and woman who worked so hard to create a new life in the sometimes harsh, sometimes beautiful prairie. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with Emmaline and Geoffrey, and look forward to Ms. Sawyer's next offering.

Presenting WHERE THE HEART LEADS by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming back another lovely lady, author Kim Vogel Sawyer. Kim’s latest book, Where the Heart Leads is the long-awaited sequel to Waiting for Summer's Return.

Kim Vogel SawyerTHE BIO

Kim Vogel Sawyer, an award-willing and best-selling author, is fond of C words like children, cats, and chocolate. Her debut novel, Waiting for Summer's Return, hit the bestseller charts, was endorsed by Janette Oke, and became a Crossings Book Club Main Selection. Between June of 2006 and March of 2008, she has celebrated the release of ten novels. In her spare time, she enjoys drama, quilting, and calligraphy. Kim and her husband, Don, reside in Kansas and have three daughters and four grandsons.

THE INTERVIEW

JA: Please tell us about your latest book, Where the Heart Leads.
KVS: This book is a sequel to my first Bethany House historical, Waiting for Summer’s Return, which released in June of 2006, so there’s been a slight time gap in between. :o) Where the Heart Leads features a grown up Thomas Ollenburger, who has fulfilled his father’s desire and earned a college degree. The only question now is…what should he do with this hard-won education? Thomas is torn between to worlds—the small town of Gaeddert, Kansas, and the lively city of Boston. Of course, he also feels affection for two women, one from each location. Thomas has been taught to follow God’s will, but right now he isn’t sure where God is leading. When he becomes involved in the presidential campaign for a candidate with questionable morals, his confusion mounts. Where does he belong?

JA: We first met Thomas in Waiting for Summer’s Return. Did you always plan to have him at the center of the sequel, or did he demand his own story?
KVS: Bethany House prefers I write stand-alone stories, so a sequel was never planned. However, reader feedback consistently requested a sequel to continue Summer and Peter’s story. When I began thinking about a sequel, focusing on Thomas and letting Summer and Peter play secondary roles felt natural. This is a very different story from Waiting for Summer’s Return, but I hope readers will enjoy this second peek into Gaeddert and the lives of the Ollenburgers.

KVS - Where the Heart LeadsJA: Thomas is torn between two women. I think we can all relate to times when we’ve reached a crossroads. How does Thomas’s faith come into play when dealing with his dilemma?
KVS: Thomas is a young man who respects his father and his father’s teaching. He believes in God, and he believes he needs to follow God’s will. But like so many other young people, up until this point he has pretty much relied on his parents’ beliefs rather than solidifying the relationship with God for himself. So Thomas has to do a great deal of growing in this story as he develops a personal, all-his-own relationship with his heavenly Father.

JA: What do you want people to take away after reading Where the Heart Leads?
KVS: God wants to be involved in every facet of our lives. He has a perfect plan for each of us, and we can only find true fulfillment when we are in the center of His will. When we seek Him, we find life’s answers.

JA: What’s next for you in the writing arena?
KVS: The next book will release in January of 2009. Titled A Promise for Spring, it features Emmaline Bradford, a young woman arriving from England to join her betrothed, Geoffrey Garrett, on a sheep ranch in Kansas. The conditions are not at all what she expected, and her desire to return to her homeland is strong. Geoffrey finally makes a promise—if she will stay through the winter, he will let her choose where she wants to live: Kansas or England. When spring arrives, will Emmaline sail back to England, or will she carve out a life with Geoffrey?

JA: As well as being a prolific writer, you’re also a sought-after speaker. What’s your favorite topic to speak on?
KVS: I absolutely love sharing my testimony. Years ago (in 2000), God began prompting me to speak, and I balked big time. I don’t like being in front of crowds, and I told Him repeatedly, “I have nothing of value to say!” But He kept prodding me. Finally in 2002, I finally caved in and said I would do it, but He would have to give me words to speak. He answered resoundingly on September 21, 2004, and every time I share my testimony, I get to celebrate the wonder of the moment when He reached through my shadows of pain and shame and swept the darkness away. It is so gratifying to see the shadows of other women lifted when I share the truth of God’s healing touch.

JA: One of your speaking topics is Lessons Learned from Chocolate. So what can we learn from this delightful indulgence? (Please, give me an excuse to eat more!)
KVS: LOL This is a fun one because I share how opening the wrappers on a specific brand of chocolate candy opened the door to increased Bible study. Amazing how spending more time in God’s Word brings change into your life. I also share those changes. And yes, I always bring chocolate when I share this topic!

JA: When you get a chance to relax, what’s your favorite thing to do?
KVS: I love to get lost in a good book. I also enjoy traveling. (As I answer these questions, I am bouncing across a pot-holed Yukon highway in a tour bus as part of a land-cruise of Alaska.) I also adore spending time with my daughters and grandsons.

JA: Last but not least, how can people keep up with your latest publishing news?
KVS: I keep my website up-to-date with new releases and any other publishing news. So please stop by www.KimVogelSawyer.com and take a peek—I love having visitors!

Thanks for taking time out of your vacation to visit with us, Kim. May God continue to bless your writing journey!

Meet Kim Vogel Sawyer - Interview & Book Giveaway

Kim Vogel SawyerIt’s my great pleasure to present Kim Vogel Sawyer. I just got my hands on her latest book, My Heart Remembers, yesterday, and I’m having a hard time putting it down! Let’s meet Kim.

THE BIO

Kim Vogel Sawyer, an award-willing and best-selling author, is fond of C words like children, cats, and chocolate. Her debut novel, Waiting for Summer's Return, hit the bestseller charts, was endorsed by Janette Oke, and became a Crossings Book Club Main Selection. Between June of 2006 and March of 2008, she has celebrated the release of ten novels. In her spare time, she enjoys drama, quilting, and calligraphy. Kim and her husband, Don, reside in Kansas and have three daughters and four grandsons.

THE INTERVIEW

JA: Your latest book is My Heart Remembers from Bethany House. Please tell us about it.
KVS: The publisher's description follows--Orphaned in a tenement fire, three Irish immigrant children, hoping to be adopted, are sent to Missouri aboard an orphan train. Despite eight-year-old Maelle's desperate attempts to keep her siblings together, each child is taken by a different family. Maelle vows that she will never stop searching for her siblings and that they will be together one day. Seventeen years later, Maelle is still searching. So are her brother and sister. United by blood, divided by time, will they ever be reunited?

JA: This is a story about a family that has been shattered in the worst way. How did you come up with the idea?
KVS: One of the dearest people in my life when I was a child was a woman I called Tantie (my childish attempt at the German word "tante" for "aunt"). She was my babysitter, and then--to my delight--she became my step-grandma in 1969. Not until after her death did I learn this sweet-faced woman, who had no children of her own but willingly raised a dozen abandoned or unwanted children, was herself an "unwanted" child. A train ride brought her to a new family when she was still very young, but she was never formally adopted and grew up feeling as though she didn't belong. Her life story inspired this fictional story of searching for family.

JA: The heroine, Maelle, is eight years old when she’s separated from her siblings. She vows to reunite them, but as the years go by, hope fades. What would you say to someone who finds herself losing hope?
KVS: Look up. Everything of this earth is temporal--it can only last as long as our physical bodies exist. But our relationship with our heavenly Father is eternal--it goes on forever. His blessings to us are ours forever. Our only real and lasting hope is in Him.

KVS - My Heart RemembersJA: What do you want people to take away after reading My Heart Remembers?
KVS: I believe there is a universal longing to belong. We try to fill that longing in a variety of ways, but the only thing that will bring true joy and fulfillment is a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. My prayer is that readers will discover the true bringer of joy and fulfillment as they travel the road to reunion with these characters.

JA: This is your tenth book to come out in two years. I sit in awe! How do you do it?
KVS: Sometimes I sit in awe, too... The only thing I can say is "I can do everything through him who gives me strength" (Phil. 4:13). By myself, I can't put two meaningful words on the page. But with prayer, and leaning on His strength, the stories come out. I honestly don't have any other explanation than...it was His will. And His will will be done.

JA: What’s next for you in the writing arena?
KVS: In August, the sequel to my first historical novel, Waiting for Summer's Return, will release. Titled Where the Heart Leads, it lets readers step back into Gaeddert, Kansas, a decade after the first story ended. Thomas Ollenburger is now a young man with a college diploma in hand...but what does God intend for his future? I hope readers enjoy seeing how Peter, Summer, and Thomas have grown and changed.

JA: On your website, you talk about why you write fiction. Would you share a bit of that here?
KVS: Certainly. I believe a story can draw people in and make an impact. I have a real heart for sharing the gospel. I'm pretty much a seat-of-the-pants writer, which means I don't plan my stories, yet...somewhere in each story...the message of the saving grace of Jesus is told. There are those who would resist someone sharing a personal testimony, yet they will read a story. Hopefully the message comes through, wrapped in an entertaining tale.

And, truthfully, I gain a lot through the writing of fiction. When I take characters through spiritual growth and development, my own faith grows deeper--the characters' journey often becomes my journey. I pray my stories not only entertain the reader, but also edify.

JA: What’s something that people would be surprised to learn about you?
KVS: I'm a real introvert, but I love acting in theatre--the quirkier the part, the more fun I find it. Some of my past roles have included Queen Aggravain in Once Upon A Mattress, Mrs. Dubose in To Kill A Mockingbird, and Clairee in Steel Magnolias. Someday I'd like to perform in Fiddler on the Roof as the Matchmaker. :o)

JA: When you get a chance to read for fun, what’s the first thing you grab?
KVS: Historical fiction. Ever since my first grade teacher gave me Little House in the Big Woods for Christmas, I've loved traveling back in time through a good story.

JA: Last but not least, how can people keep up with your latest publishing news?
KVS: Please feel free to visit my website www.KimVogelSawyer.com. I update my newsletter bi-monthly. I love visitors, so come on by.

Thank you, Kim, and continued blessings on your writing journey!
