Farewell, LOST. Thanks for the ride!

Well, that's it. LOST is over. If you haven't seen it yet, STOP READING NOW!

Okay, let's continue...

As expected, the finale is receiving intense scrutiny. Some, like me, found it gripping, touching, and emotionally satisfying. Others feel cheated that all their questions weren't answered (What's the deal with the polar bear?)

While it would have been nice to know about the bear, the Dharma notebooks, and how Mother got on the island in the first place, the show really wasn't about that. Yes, the uniqueness of what happened on the island was a huge part of what made us love LOST. But from the very beginning, LOST drew us in because of the people. Their struggles with past sins, their need for redemption and love, and their hope in the face of almost certain catastrophe. Even characters we shouldn't sympathize with, like the tragically layered Ben Linus, revealed a humanity that made them relatable. We didn't know it at the time, but it seems Jack gave us the theme of the show in season one: "If we don't live together, we'll die alone." These people needed each other, and the road to them realizing it was fascinating.

One thing that seems to be causing the most unhappiness for viewers is confusion over exactly when everybody died. For the record, everything that happened on the island actually happened (in the story world, that is... I'm a fan, not a crazy person). In other words, the Oceanic passengers weren't dead from the get go, and they didn't all die when Juliet set off the bomb. Nope, everyone died exactly when we saw them die. The sideways reality, which most of us thought was an alternate time line, was actually a kind of cosmic transfer station. It was a way for them to all come together before moving on. Moving on to what? That's left open to interpretation. But the fact that they were all dead and all came together at the same time, doesn't mean that they died at the same time. As Jack's father said, "There is no now here." Time wasn't an issue. So even though Shannon died long before Jack, and Hurley and Ben lived longer on the island, they all came together at the same place.

Despite the feeling of satisfaction at the end, I'm sorry to see LOST go. For six seasons, the writers stretched the boundaries of what we expected to see on network television. They took risks, made bold moves, and asked us to think. As a result, LOST became the kind of show that would spark long discussions about spirituality, philosophy, and when Sawyer might again take off his shirt.

The LOST experience was quite a ride. I doubt we'll see anything like it on TV again. But I'm thankful for what we had. And that there will be a six-season Blu-Ray set available before Christmas.

Before They Were LOST

As we prepare to say farewell to LOST, I thought it might be fun to take a look at a few of these actors before they took on the characters we know and love...

As Sawyer, Josh Holloway is all about being cool. But back in his modeling days, it looks like Josh was all about being colorful. (And no, I have no idea what he was selling in this ad.)

As doomed-to-die Juliet, Elizabeth Mitchell may have fallen for bad-boy Sawyer, but in The Santa Claus 2 she went for a whole different kinda guy.

Granted, Terry O'Quinn is kinda freaky at times in his dual role as John Locke/Smoke Monster. But he was downright creepy in this 1980s horror flick, The Stepfather.

This is quite possibly my favorite. We all know Nestor Carbonell as the tortured Richard Alpert. But before that, Nestor took a turn in tights as Batmanuel on the short-lived TV series, The Tick.

I think this gives hope to anyone who thinks, "Man, why did I wear that?"

LOST - What's Wrong with this Picture?

LOST: What They Died For - Was it too easy?

After watching last night's last regular episode of LOST, I had this thought: "That was too easy." Which is the beauty of LOST. Nothing is ever quite as it seems. Such as...

Jack Steps Up - After snatching his ashes from Hurley, Jacob makes a mystical fire and can now be seen by all four of the remaining candidates. He tells them, in the vaguest terms possible, about the island, what his job is, and why he brought them there. When Jacob tells them that if one of them doesn't take over his job, Jack immediately steps up. "I'll do it. It's why I'm here. It's my purpose." Jacob beams angelically and they go to the river to share island-communion, after which Jack's eyes darn near glow with enlightenment. Standing far off, watching, are Kate, Sawyer and Hurley. Sawyer says "And we thought he had a God complex before." Hurley's responds with, "I'm just glad it's not me." Uh oh. Not so fast, Hurley. When Jack asked Jacob how long he had to do the job, the answer was, "As long as you can." Pretty cryptic, if you ask me. Is it possible that Jack is a stop gap? A filler until Hurley is ready to step in? Hmmm...

Richard Bites the Dust - Or does he? Ben, Miles and Richard hike back to New Otherton in order to get Ben's stash of C-4 out of the secret room in his old house. (The plan is to destroy the plane on Hydra Island) But Widmore, his lady friend and UnLocke find them there. In order to give the others time to carry out the plan, Richard says he'll make UnLocke think he's going to join them, since he's wanted that all along. Apparently, Richard's not nearly as important as he used to be, because he no sooner steps outside than the smoke monster swoops through and sends him flying. It would be easy to assume he's dead, but this isn't the first time he's been walloped by smoky and lived. I fully expect to see Richard in the finale.

Ben Returns to the Dark Side - After Richard's knock out, Ben waits outside the house to confront the monster. This time, it comes in the form of UnLocke and tells Ben he needs his help. There are some people he has to kill. Ben immediately jumps on board, giving up Widmore's hiding place and even shooting the man himself. It seems that Ben has aligned himself with evil again. Or has he? Remember, Widmore had Ben's daughter killed, which explains why he had no qualms about killing him. But for the most part, I think Ben is hanging out with UnLocke because he's fighting for his life. He's got to find a weakness for this smoke-monster-man in order to defeat him. I still think that in the end, Ben is going to do the right thing and will be instrumental in kicking Smokey to the curb.


There were lots of other delicious nuggets in this episode. Like...

Why was Kate's name crossed off the wall? Because she became a mother (to Aaron). But Jacob tells her that "It's just a line on wall. The job is still yours if you want it." In other words, sometimes a red door is just a red door. Not everything is symbolic. Just most things.

Everybody's going to a concert. In sideways land, Desmond, Kate, Jack, Charlotte, and Miles are all going to a charity concert. It sounds like it's the same one Eloise Hawkings was organizing, which means she, Charles Widmore, Penny, and Charlie (Drive Shaft was to play) will also be there. Jack's son mentioned that his mom would be there, and I'd bet money she turns out to be Juliet. Hurley and Sayid drove off in his hummer to take care of something else... perhaps rounding up everyone else? At any rate, it looks like this is where our castaways will come together.

What's with all the bran? Did you notice that honkin' big box of "Super Bran" cereal on the table at Jack's house? Not sure if there's something significant about it, but is sure was funny.


At this point, we know a lot of things, and we still have a lot of questions. One thing I know for sure... I haven't been this excited about a finale since the last show of Alias (another J.J. Abrams mind-bender that went out on a bitter-sweet note). I find it interesting that the last show of LOST airs on what in the church calendar is Pentecost Sunday. Coincidence? Hmmm....

LOST: The Candidate - It's the Beginning of the End

I'll give you a minute to leave...

Are they gone? Okay...

For those of you who did watch it... WOW! I was expecting someone to die tonight, but I never thought we'd lose three of our core castaways. On top of that, UnLocke has finally tipped his hand, and Jack appears to be claiming his own destiny. So what does it all mean? Here's what I think...

Sayid had to die - Remember what Hurley said in the last episode about people being able to come back from the dark side? He mentioned Anakin (Skywalker, who became Darth Vadar in Star Wars). It was an act of sacrifice - saving his son, Luke - that redeemed Anakin. While I believe Sayid turned when he found Desmond in the well and spared his life, the redemption became complete tonight when he grabbed that bomb and got it as far away from his friends as possible. Unfortunately, he didn't run quite fast enough...

Sun and Jin - LOST's most tragic couple - When the bomb went off in the sub, not only did it kill Sayid, but it pinned Sun to the wall behind a huge piece of metal. As the water rose higher and higher, Sun begged Jin to leave. Jin refused. I kept expecting Sun to remind Jin that they have a daughter back home, and it would be nice if she had at least one parent to raise her. But that didn't happen. When Jin said, "I will never leave you again," that was it. Their fate was sealed. The last shot of Sun and Jin was of their clasped hands, under water. Then, reminiscent of Jack and Rose in Titanic, their hands slipped apart, and Jin floated away. That part moved me, but what killed me was when Hurley found out and he burst into tears on the beach. Yep, I cried, too.  

Having your name written on the cave wall doesn't mean you won't die... it just means the Man in Black can't kill you. Up until tonight, I believed that UnLocke could only get off the island if he went with the others, but Jack nailed it. He can't leave unless all the candidates are dead. Problem is, he can't kill them himself. Making the bomb and putting it in Jack's pack, knowing that everyone would end up together in the sub, was a genius way to have them kill each other. But it didn't work. Sawyer, Hurley, Kate and Jack are still alive, and now there's no doubt that UnLocke can't be trusted.

Who else will die? I can almost guarantee that Claire will bite the dust. My guess is that she will also come back from the dark side, stand up to UnLocke, and he will take her out. But in her sacrifice will be her redemption. She may even give Kate her blessing to raise Aaron.

Meanwhile, in Sideways land... Things are fairly confusing. The passengers of Oceanic 815 are crossing paths like crazy. They are experiencing those odd, haven't-I-seen-you-before moments. When the real Locke was lying in the hospital bed, talking in a half-sedated state, he said "Keep pushing the button" and "Why won't you believe me?" The connection between the two realities is there, and I still think that the two will merge back together into one. I just have no idea how.

Oh, and here's some exciting news. TVGuide.com reports that the series finale has now been extended by thirty minutes. It will air on Sunday (make note of the different day), May 23 at 9/8c, push the local news back by half an hour, and be followed by the Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to LOST special at 12:05 AM.

LOST - The Bobbleheads are Here!

I ran across this today and thought it was hysterical. The ABC TV Store carries LOST bobbleheads. The Richard bobbledude is my favorite, but you can also purchase Daniel Faraday and Dr. Edgar Halliwax. The three of them can sit on the shelf and nod at you while you try to unravel the mysteries of LOST!

LOST: Ab Aeterno - Just give Nestor Carbonell an Emmy now, okay?

I don't like to post about LOST to early and give away any spoilers. But I'm guessing you've probably watched it by now. If you haven't, stop here because there are spoilers ahead.

I'll give you a minute to leave if you have to...

Okay, here we go...

Out of all the characters on the island, Richard Alpert is probably the most mysterious and enigmatic of the bunch. We know he's been around for a long time and that he never ages. But when did he get to the island? How did he get there? Is he wearing eyeliner or not? By far, this was my most anticipated episode of the season, and it did not disappoint!

First off, what does Ab Aeterno mean? It's Latin and basically means "from the beginning of time." Very appropriate since we go back to the beginning of Richard's time on the island. And hats off to Nestor Carbonell. His performance tonight was passionate, heart breaking, and thoroughly believable. Bravo!

Within the first five minutes, the now disillusioned and tormented Richard offers this bombshell. "I'm dead. We're all dead. And this is Hell." Whoa! LOST fans have hypothesized since season one that the castaways are actually dead and in hell or purgatory. So this was a great way to address that. As shocking as the statement was, it soon became clear that it's not accurate. It's based on all Richard's fears and trauma from his past. But when he says it, Richard truly believes it.

Richard's story begins on Tenerife in the Canary Islands in 1867. At that point, he's Ricardo, a wild-haired, hunky Spaniard who wants nothing more than to save the life of his beloved wife, Isabella (who is coughing up blood into a hanky... you can already see how this will end). But in his quest to gain life saving medicine from the I'm-just-in-it-for-the-money doctor, Ricardo accidentally kills the man. Anguished over what he's done, he takes the medicine home only to find that Isabella is already dead.

Ricardo is taken to prison. He is in his cell, on his knees, reading a Bible, when he is visited by a priest. Richardo begs for the priest to forgive his sins and absolve him, but the priest says no. He tells Ricardo that he's being hung in the morning, so there's no time to pay penance. He is destined to burn in Hell. (At this point, I was pretty ticked off at the priest. Not only did he leave Richard feeling like there was no hope for redemption, but he took his Bible! What a creep!)

But Ricardo receives a stay of execution when he's bought by a man making a trip to the New World. Which is how Richard ended up on The Black Rock, the ship that crashes on the island.

That's the back story of the back story. Rather than make this a recap of the entire show, I just want to hit on some of the highpoints:

1) In his cell, Ricardo's Bible was open to the Gospel of Luke. He appeared to be reading the account of when Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and the devil came to tempt him. This lines right up with what happened to Ricardo. After the crash, while he was chained in the hold of the ship, he was essentially in a desert. Water was just beyond his reach. Freedom was just beyond his reach. Then the Man in Black (MIB) broke him further by coming to him in the form of his beloved Isabella, giving Ricardo hope, then making him think she'd been killed. Finally, when Ricardo was as low as he could get, MIB came to him, promising to give Ricardo the thing he wants the most in exchange for his help.

2) MIB claimed that Jacob is the devil. I believe he's lying. There's been a lot of talk about which one of these two is good and which is evil. Considering the mish-mash of different religions the LOST writers have drawn from, I'm sure this isn't going to end up with "MIB is the devil and Jacob is Jesus." However, I do think that MIB is the inherently evil one and Jacob is the one who stands for good.

3) Jacob was much angrier in this episode than we've ever seen him before. First, he beat up Ricardo. Then, in what might be called the roughest baptism ever, he dunked him in the ocean three times until Ricardo finally cried out "I want to live!" After that, the fairly calm, even keeled Jacob we're used to was back.

4) Why do bad things happen to good people? Essentially, that's what Ricardo asked Jacob. "Why don't you tell them what to do? Why don't you help them?" Jacob's answer: Because it doesn't mean anything if I do it for them. It's LOSTs way of examining free will.

5) Jacob offers Ricardo a job - to be his voice to the people on the island. (In keeping with the Catholic theme running through the episode, it's kind of like Peter being made the first Pope). But when Ricardo says he wants Isabella back, Jacob says he can't do that. Ricardo asks to be absolved from his sins, but Jacob can't do that, either (which removes him from the "maybe he's Jesus" category). Fine then, Ricardo says. I want to live forever so I never have to go to hell. Jacob smiles, puts his hand on Ricardo's shoulder (the touch) and says, "That I can do." Now Richard has been baptized, drunk wine with Jacob, and been given eternal life. Interesting.

6) Jacob keeps bringing people to the island to prove that people are good at heart. Which means The Others were made up of the people who made the right choices and lived. When Ben joined The Others, he started infecting the group, leading them to commit evil in the name of good (killing all the Dharma people). At one point, Charles Widmore was the leader of The Others, until Ben banished him from the island. Now Widmore is coming back. It may be that Widmore actually IS one of the good guys and means to make war with MIB.

7) So what is the island? As Jacob explains it, it's like the cork in a wine bottle, keeping the wine from spilling out. The island is keeping evil from spilling out into the world. This was interesting, because we already know that the world outside the island goes on as always and isn't a beautiful, sin-free place. I suppose, if MIB manages to leave the island, things will really go to pot!

8) Now we know what happened to that big statue... The Black Rock crashed into it.

9) Considering where and when Richard's story started, I can now put to rest the idea that he's Egyptian. So no, folks, he's not wearing eyeliner. Nestor just has bee-YU-tiful eyes.

10) By the end of the episode, a line was clearly drawn: MIB intends to kill all the candidates and Richard needs to kill MIB or, as dead Isabella told Hurley to tell Richard, "you'll all go to hell." Whether that's true or it's just something that Isabella knew Richard would respond to is unclear, but there's a battle coming on. And I can't wait!

How My LOST Fan Promo Went Wrong

I hate it when things don't turn out like I want them to. You could say I'm a perfectionist, although that doesn't translate into all areas of my life. (One look in my bathroom will prove that... which is why no one else is allowed in there!) But when it comes to creative things, I want to get everything perfect. It's frustrating enough when I get in my own way, but when my "masterpiece" is messed up by something I have no control over... well, that goes beyond frustration into a realm that has no name.

Here's a silly example... I love the TV series LOST. Imagine my delight to find out that ABC was holding "The Ultimate LOST Fan Promo Contest." So I went to the site and began using their editing tools to create my own 35 second LOST promo. I was having all kinds of problems on my laptop, so I switched over to my son's PC. All was going well. I found the music I wanted. I put my clips in order and edited several of them for maximum impact. Finally, after a dozen or more play throughs, it was exactly how I wanted it.

I submitted my video.

My video was accepted.

I watched my video on ABC.com... and then I nearly cried, because somehow, the editing tool did NOT work right. Now remember, I watched the final cut several times before submitting it, and it was PERFECT. What you can watch now is close, but the final bit of the montage is what makes me want to weep. Somehow, an extra second was added to the front of it and cut a second off at the end, so Kate (who wasn't there before) says "ack" (because the "J" didn't make it in) and the last words that Jack says - "What happened?" - actually sound like "What happe-".

Yep, I know it's a silly thing to be upset over. In the grand scheme of things, it's at the bottom of the "Stuff I Should be Concerned About" list. It's not even like I had a chance of winning the contest. My entry is one of about 6000, after all. Still, my heart dropped when I watched it. Because I did everything right on my end, checked and double checked it before submitting, and now there's no way to fix it.

ABC's Updated V Series to Star Elizabeth Mitchell & Morena Baccarin

Summer will soon be here. Which means it's a time to frolic in the sun, a time to be with family and friends... and a time to consider the upcoming Fall TV season.

The new series I'm most excited about? V. Yes, it's a remake of the '80s series about visitors from somewhere out in space. They seem friendly at first... but isn't that how all alien visits start out?

I was jazzed to find out that Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Stargate SG-1) plays Anna, the leader of the Visitors. But today I just learned that Elizabeth Mitchell (LOST) is also in the cast, as FBI agent Erica Evans. I think we can expect some cool head-to-head confrontations with these two.

Of course, that brings up another thought for those of us who love LOST: Does this mean that Juliette (Mitchell's character on LOST) won't be in the final season? Did she actually die? Or will she have an abbreviated role? Or is Mitchell just one busy lady? I have no idea, but I look forward to finding out.

Wednesdays. The night when LOST and American Idol battle for my live viewing time. LOST wins, but I record AI and watch it right after, lest I find out the results from over-zealous Facebook friends. Which leads me to tonight's moments:

LOST - AH HA!
Tonight, Ben had to seek forgiveness for the one sin he's truly sorry for: the death of his daughter, the stolen Alex. And when he finally gets to the right place, after falling through the floor in an underground tunnel (so he's waaaaay down there) what do we find? Columns covered by Egyptian hieroglyphs. Some time last month, I made the connection between Paul's ankh necklace, the big foot statue, and yes, Richard's eyeliner and supposed that we would find out there's an Egyptian back story on the island. TA DA! Now I'm just waiting to find out that the never-aging Richard is in actuality a pharaoh or something along those lines. Wait for it...


American Idol - Awwwwwe....
It wasn't a huge surprise. I even picked him last night as the one to go home. But actually seeing Scott get his Idol adios was pretty moving. He seems like a genuinely nice fellow, and his sense of humor has been wonderfully dry and quick. Who can forget his on-stage high five with Ryan? It's great that he's going to be on the AI tour, but I'm going to miss seeing him on the show.

Lost: 316

Lost is getting soooo good! If you didn't see last night's episode, STOP right now. There are SPOILERS AHEAD! Here's what I'm thinking about tonight's episode, titled "316"...

What's happening to all the island kids? Kate had no intention of going back to that island, but then she turned up at Jack's house. When he asked "Where's Aaron?" she said she'd go with him as long as he never asked that question again. And then there's Sun, who has to go back to the island if there's even a chance Jin's alive. Uh, Sun, what about your little girl? Guess she doesn't need parents...

What happened to Ben's face? Jack had to go retrieve Locke's body because Ben got beaten up somewhere between the church and the airport. My guess is that the beating had something to do with getting Sayid on the plane.

The similarities... According to Eloise, the conditions on the plane had to be as close as possible to the original. this could explain why Sayid was in police custody (like Kate was the first time), Hurley had a guitar (like Charlie had) and Locke is in a coffin in the cargo hold (like Jack's father was - in fact, he's wearing Jack's father's shoes). So Jack, Kate, Sun, Hurley, Sayid, Ben, Locke, are all on the plane...

But what about Desmond? Eloise told him the island wasn't through with him. But he's not on the plane, and he doesn't plan on going back. But he wasn't on the plane before. He ended up on the island because of a ship wreck. Hmmm, Desmond, Penny and baby Charlie are living on a boat now. Is it possible they might sail into this open time/space window? We already know Charles Widmore ends up living on the island. Could it be that baby Charlie lands on the island during a time shift? And could Desmond and Penny end up being the Adam and Eve skeletons the castaways found during season one? Hmmm....

Random LOST Thoughts

I hate reading spoilers. Which is why I stay away from Twitter and Facebook until after I've seen the latest episode of LOST. That show's just too much fun to be spoiled! And it's also why I figured I should wait a few days before ruminating about the latest episode. But now that it's safe...

Grandfather Paradox? The episode opens with Penny and Desmond having a baby. Flash forward a couple of years and Desmond is on his way to Oxford to find Daniel Faraday's mother, but first, he says goodbye to Penny and the baby... little Charlie. On the island, our castaways end up in the 50s after another time flash. Locke is speaking to Richard and finds out that one of the Others is Charles. Charles Widmore. So Charles was on the island once... and Penny's baby is named Charlie... in LOST-land, I'm thinking it's quite possible that Charles is his own grandfather.

Somewhere in Time - Daniel left a girl behind in England. A girl that he did experiments on. Her sister said, "Sometimes she thinks she's three. Sometimes she talks to our dead father." So poor Theresa must be skipping around in time, at least in her mind.




See This Compass? When all the time jumping started, Richard found Locke, treated his leg wound, and gave him a compass. Where did Richard get the compass? In this episode, we find out that Locke gives it to him in the 50s jump, but Richard has never seen it before. So Richard gets it from Locke. And Locke got it from Richard. This is also the same compass from last season when Richard visited young Locke and asked him to pick which item he had owned. But of course, Locke didn't recognize it because Richard hadn't given it to him yet, because he hadn't gotten it from Locke yet because... Ouch. Brain cramp.

Are You My Mother? Daniel thought that Ellie, the woman taking him at gunpoint to the hydrogen bomb, was familiar. Could it be that Ellie is actually Eloise Hawking, who it appears is Daniel's mother? And since Widmore was on the island at the same time, what are the chances that he's Danny's daddy? Hmmm...

Okay, that's enough mind bending for one day. What about you? What crazy stuff have you found in LOST?

Great Expectations

Have you ever been so excited about a movie that you counted the days till the opening? Then you ran out to see it on opening day... only to leave the theater bitterly disappointed? That just happened to a writer friend of mine. I won't say which movie it was, but if you think of one based on the first book in a HUGELY popular young adult series, you'll probably figure it out!

This got me to thinking about my expectations. I try to keep them realistically low, but sometimes, I just can't help getting my hopes up. For example...

QUANTUM OF SOLACE - I expect three things out of a new Bond flick: (1) Lots of action, (2) the suave hunkiness of Daniel Craig, and (3) the always excellent presence of Dame Judi Dench. Despite its confusing title (I still only understand half of it) this movie delivered on all three counts. And as an added bonus, I got to see the trailer for...




THE NEW STAR TREK MOVIE - It's not coming out till May 2009, but this is one movie that I'm very excited about. Featuring a younger cast, this latest offering in the Star Trek franchise goes back to when Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Scotty and the others first come together. The casting of Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as a young Spock is inspired. I think director J.J. Abrams is going to do a bang up job with this film. Sadly, I wasn't drawn into his latest TV series, Fringe, but I loved both Alias and the final item on my list of gotta-sees...


LOST - Two months from today and the wait is over! Lost is my absolute favorite show on TV. Even when others were complaining about how it had lost its way in season three, I stuck with the castaways, happy to go along for the ride. And what a ride it's been. In season four, we had not only flashbacks, but flashforwards. And the season ended with the most spectacular reveal of all: the island can move. And so it did. But where did it go... or when? You can be sure I'll be glued to the TV on January 21st to find out.
